Hyderabad: In a setback to BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy from Huzurabad Assembly Constituency, the Telangana High Court refused to grant relief to the MLA in the alleged extortion case against him.

Further, the HC Single Bench of Justice Kunuru Lakshman, directed the public prosecutor to file the counter affidavit in the anticipatory bail petition filed by the petitioner MLA Kaushik Reddy in the FIR No. 252 of 2025 dated April 21 registered against him under sections 308(2), 308(4) 352 BNS in Subedari PS.

On Monday, the court dismissed the criminal petition filed by Padi Kaushik Reddy, seeking to quash the proceedings in the same case. Later, the MLA filed an anticipatory bail petition.

What is the case about?

During the course of the hearing, TV Ramana Rao, counsel for the petitioner Padi Kaushik Reddy, pleaded before the court to grant the petitioner relief from arrest at least till the anticipatory bail petition is decided in the court.

Furthermore, the counsel informed the court that the complainant, Katta Uma Devi, wife of Manoj Reddy, before the Subedari PS has levelled baseless allegations against the MLA stating that the MLA has made ransom calls to her husband demanding Rs 25 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.

In her complaint, she said that her husband came under a lot of stress after he was threatened by Kaushik Reddy, stating that he had to pay money to run a granite business in Huzurabad constituency.

Kaushik Reddy stated that there is a delay of three and a half days in filing the complaint in the Subedari PS, and the statements of the witnesses also clearly spoke about the delay in registration of the crime from the date of the offence.

The judge was hearing a criminal petition filed by MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy, seeking anticipatory bail in the alleged extortion case. Kaushik Reddy told the court that the said case against him is intended to wreak political vengeance against him as he belongs to the opposition party, BRS.

The court adjourned the case hearing to June 24.
