Hyderabad: Scramble to quench thirst, 30 monkeys drown in water tank at Nagarjunasagar Hill Colony
The incident came to light when locals noticed a foul smell emanating from the tank

Constructed by the water supply department of NSP, the tank was intended to provide drinking water for two hundred households of Hill Colony in the 1st ward of Nandikonda Municipality in Nalgonda district.
Reports said the monkeys, seeking to quench their thirst, slipped into the water tank. The incident came to light when locals noticed a foul smell emanating from the tank on Wednesday. People informed the municipal authorities who the retrieval of the remains of primates from the tank.
Residents have expressed profound concern over the incident, particularly as they had been consuming water from the same source for an extended period. Allegations have been raised against the municipal staff, contending that despite being responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of drinking water tanks, adequate measures were not taken to prevent such tragedies.
Responding to the tragic incident, Nagarjunasagar project superintendent engineer Nageswara Rao said that the Nandikonda Hill colony has two water tankers of 2,000 liters capacity each and a 1,000 liter tank, apart from that another tank where the monkeys drowned. For the last three days, the water supply through the tanker was not done and came to know that the monkeys drowned. Immediately, the municipal authorities were alerted and the entire water tank was cleaned, he said.
The SE further said that only 50 houses were given water supply through the water tank, where monkeys drowned and for the last three days water was not supplied to the residents. He also made it clear that there was no drinking water problem for a majority of houses in Nandikonda Hill colony. Officials are directed to supply drinking water for 50 houses from alternate methods, he added.
Taking to X (formely Twitter), BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) said, "What a shameful state of affairs in the Telangana Municipal department. Periodical cleaning & routine Maintenance which are standard protocols to be followed are being neglected. Governance has been in shambles because the Congress government prioritised politics over public health."
