Medchal: Sri Chaitanya college student ends life; protests rock campus

Medchal: A 17-year-old student ended her life in a college hostel after her invigilator scolded her during an exam. This incident occurred on Monday at Sri Chaitanya Junior College in Peerjadhiguda, Medchal district.

"The daughter of an agricultural laborer from Chenchuguda Village was a first-year BiPC student at Sri Chaitanya College in Peerjadiguda, Medchal. During a pre-final exam on Monday, she was scolded by the invigilator while writing the botany paper. This hurt her deeply. After writing her exam, she went to her room and took her life. Her classmates alerted the college management. She was shifted to a private hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival," police said.

Tension gripped the college after the incident, Student groups including AISF, MRPS, SFI, and NSUI held a protest on the campus. They alleged that the student took her life due to pressure and harassment. Medipally police later detained several protestors.

The victim’s father alleged that his daughter had been repeatedly harassed for her college fees. He had informed the college management that he would pay after selling his groundnut crop. However, they didn't listen to him and continued to humiliate her in front of her classmates. "This harassment deeply hurt my child and she took her life,” he said.

College principal Mamata denied that the invigilator scolded the student during the exam. She said during the examination, the victim was caught cheating by the invigilator. He took her paper and gave her another to write the exam.

However, she did not write anything on the new sheet. After the exam, she went to the hostel and her body was later discovered by her classmate. Medipalli police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
