Municipal polls aftermath: 200 BJP, BRS booth-level leaders join Telangana Congress

Hyderabad: 200 booth-level leaders of BJP, BRS from Adilabad join Congress

Hyderabad: Two hundred booth-level leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party and Bharat Rashtra Samithi joined the Congress party on Monday.

The workers from Adilabad district joined the party, indicating a shift in the political landscape after the February 26 municipal elections.

Congress secured a landslide victory across the state in the municipal elections (winning over 1,500 wards). In Adilabad, where the Congress and BJP were previously neck-and-neck, the Congress’s ability to capture key urban local bodies has convinced grassroots leaders that the "hand" symbol is the safest bet for the upcoming local body elections. The mass defection, centered primarily around the Boath constituency, is being hailed as a major strategic victory for the Congress following its decisive performance in the recent municipal elections.

A Show of Strength in Hyderabad

The joining ceremony, held in Hyderabad, was a high-profile affair led by TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud and DCC President Dr. Naresh Jadhav. The event was further bolstered by the presence of Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, the in-charge for Adilabad district, signaling the state leadership’s focus on consolidating power in the tribal heartland.

Prominent figures who donned the Congress scarf include:

Chilukuri Bhumaiah (Senior BRS Spokesperson)

Athram Nagorao (Former MPP)

Geddam Kashinath (Pradhan Sangham Mandal President)

Other influential local leaders include Chakkati Mahesh, Bhim Rao Patil, Pandupalli Srinivas, and Dubbala Mallesh.

"Trust in Ideology"

Addressing the new entrants, TPCC Chief Mahesh Kumar Goud stated that the influx of seasoned politicians reflects a growing public trust in the Congress's developmental programs. "The entry of such experienced leaders from Booth strengthens our party's foundation in the Adilabad region. Our government is attracting those who want to see genuine progress at the grassroots level," Goud remarked.

The migration was facilitated by Booth constituency in-charge Ade Gajender, with support from veteran leader and former Union Minister Samudrala Venugopal Chary.

Looking Toward Local Body Polls

Following the ceremony, the new members met with Government Advisor Sudarshan Reddy to pledge their commitment to strengthening the party at the village and mandal levels.

Political analysts suggest that this "exodus" from the BRS and BJP is a strategic move by local leaders to align with the ruling party ahead of the upcoming local body elections. For the BRS, the loss of a spokesperson and several former local body representatives in a single day represents a significant blow to their influence in the Adilabad district.

Many senior leaders of the region, like Chilukuri Bhumaiah and Athram Nagorao, view the Congress as the only viable platform to oppose the BJP's growing influence in the region.
