Hyderabad: In the last week, Hyderabad has seen a spree of crimes against girls and women. Five incidents of gang-rape of minors have been reported in the last 6-7 days. In view of this, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the matter and sought a report.
NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Telangana director general of police to directly intervene in the matter and send a detailed report within seven days on the steps taken by Telangana to ensure the safety and security of girls and women. A copy of the letter has also been sent to the Hyderabad commissioner of police.
Taking serious note of the increasing crimes against girls and women in Hyderabad, NCW said the role of the police is not only to protect and prevent crimes but also to take swift and appropriate action.
NCW said it came across an article where it was reported that five cases of rapes against minors have been reported in Hyderabad in a week. The article states that two more incidents of rapes involving minors were reported in Hyderabad on Monday, which is the fifth incident in a week.
On Sunday, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundarajan ordered chief secretary Somesh Kumar and DGP M. Mahender Reddy to submit a report on the Jubilee Hills gang-rape case within two days.
The Governor, after going through various media reports on the incident, said she was deeply anguished over the heinous incident and has therefore sought a report on the same.
As of Tuesday, four of the accused have been arrested, including three minors. The fifth accused is absconding. According to west zone DCP Joel Davis, all the juveniles are in the age group of 16-17 years.
On 3 June, MAUD minister KTR had tweeted, "Outraged & shocked with the news of the rape of a minor in Hyderabad Request HM @mahmoodalitrs Garu @TelanganaDGP Garu and @CPHydCity to take immediate & stern action. Please don't spare anyone involved irrespective of their statuses or affiliations."
