New sports policy in Telangana to focus on Olympic glory and global infrastructure
Hyderabad: The Telangana State government is set to unveil a new sports policy focused on nurturing Olympic-level talent and establishing world-class infrastructure.
The proposed policy is expected to come up for discussion in the Cabinet meeting scheduled later on Monday.
Speaking at the Olympic Day celebrations at LB Stadium here on Monday, special chief secretary Jayesh Ranjan said the new policy will be aimed at bringing international recognition to the State by producing elite athletes through structured training and support.
Focus on 2036 Olympics
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to frame long-term goals targeting the 2036 Olympic Games. Ranjan emphasised the need for Telangana to match international standards by fostering athletes capable of competing at the Olympic level.
Support for athletes, jobs and justice
Telangana Sports Authority Chairman Shivsena Reddy said the upcoming policy will include incentives and job opportunities for sportspersons who win medals.
He alleged that many athletes were neglected under the previous administration and assured that the current government is committed to ensuring justice and support for all deserving talent.
New Sports University at Gachibowli
As part of its broader strategy, the state will establish the Young India Physical Education and Sports University under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The university will operate from the Gachibowli Sports Stadium, which spans 70 acres and already houses extensive sports infrastructure. The facility will be upgraded to meet advanced training requirements.
The university will offer specialised training programmes in 14 sports: cricket, hockey, football, basketball, swimming, tennis, badminton, shooting, boxing, wrestling, table tennis, athletics, gymnastics, and aquatics.
The chief minister has ordered the formation of a Special Board and the appointment of a chairman with full administrative powers to run the university as an autonomous body.
