Sixty students of Government Dental College, Telangana, received their pending stipend after the issue was raised by News Meter.
Each student received Rs 22,327. The total arrears reimbursed by the Telangana government are Rs 6,698,100.
"This batch of students was left out and their payments were stuck. They followed up with the various authorities but there was no response. When the AIDSA raised it and it got published, there was immediate action and the amount was released," said Dr. Md Manzur Ahmed, National President of All India Dental Students Association.
TS health ministry took note
Telangana health minister Harish Rao's office took note of the NewsMeter story and sought an explanation from the directorate of health and medical education. The follow-up from the health minister's office helped in the speedy release of the stipend, explained AIDSA.
Senior dentists raised the flag
NewsMeter story was widely circulated by the students. In fact, 30 to 40 dentists' WhatsApp groups forwarded the story. Senior dentists also took note of it creating a ripple effect. All these aspects resulted in the release of the stipend.
