Hyderabad: India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai, successfully chasing 251-7 to claim the title.

Following the victory, videos claiming to show police in Telangana resorting to lathi charge to disperse celebrating crowds have gone viral.

A Facebook user shared a video with two clips. From the captions and by analysing the video, it can be seen that one clip is from Dilsukhnagar in Hyderabad, and the other is from Karimnagar.

In the Dilsukhnagar clip, police can be seen beating people with sticks at the busy Dilsukhnagar metro junction on a Sunday night to disperse a huge crowd of cricket fans who had gathered on the roads to celebrate India’s victory. The second clip has visuals of police asking people to go back home while the crowd chants ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, bursts crackers and waves national flags.

A Facebook user shared the video and wrote, “SHOCKING! | BREAKING | Hyderabad Police lathicharge cricket fans celebrating India’s ICC Victory! Police used force in Dilsukhnagar to stop citizens from celebrating India's Champions Trophy win, with similar reports from Karimnagar. BJP’s Amit Malviya questions, ‘Is this the new playbook in Congress-ruled states? Who are they trying to appease?’”(Archive)

Another Facebook user also shared the video with the caption, “Congress police lathi charge people who are celebrating India's champions trophy victory in Dilsukhnagar, Bhagyanagar (Hyd). Is this new policy in Congress-ruled states? Where should Indians celebrate India’s victory?”(Archive)

Did police lathi charge the public in Karimnagar?

Accusing the Congress government of high-handedness, Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticised the Telangana DGP, questioning why the police allegedly created a ‘law and order situation’ in the constituency. He retweeted the second clip showing police asking people to go back home.

However, speaking to NewsMeter, additional DCP Karimnagar informed that no lathi charge occurred in Karimnagar.
