Over 5.8 lakh traffic challans paid digitally as Telugu states move to instant e-Challan platform

Hyderabad: Adoption of digital payments for traffic penalties has surged across the Telugu states, with over 5.8 lakh e-challan transactions recorded in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana since October 2025.

Moving away from cash transactions and state-level web portals, motorists are rapidly adopting unified digital platforms to instantly clear their traffic dues.

AP police log over 4.5 lakh transactions, Telangana over 1.3 lakh

According to data released by NPCI Bharat BillPay Limited (NBBL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the momentum of this digital shift is accelerating.

In February 2026 alone, nearly 1.25 lakh motorists across the two states used the platform to pay their fines.

A breakdown of the total figures shows that the Andhra Pradesh Traffic Police logged over 4.5 lakh of these transactions, while the Telangana State Traffic Police recorded over 1.3 lakh.

Technological accessibility, such as digital receipts

The rapid transition is primarily driven by technological accessibility.

The e-Challan category on the Bharat Connect platform is linked with over 700 consumer-facing payment applications, banking portals and local agents. Instead of queuing up or hunting for a traffic officer with a point-of-sale (POS) machine, citizens can now discover pending challans and complete payments through their preferred UPI or banking apps.

The system immediately clears the challan and issues a digital receipt, eliminating manual processing errors and delays.

To further boost awareness, NBBL recently deployed an interactive drone campaign at major traffic junctions in Hyderabad, using floating digital screens to educate commuters on the seamless payment process.

Commenting on the shifting payment trends, Noopur Chaturvedi, MD & CEO of NBBL, stated, “The e-Challan category on Bharat Connect is more than a digital upgrade. It is a powerful example of how public institutions and technology platforms can work together to reimagine citizen services.” She added that the initiative marks a defining step toward making public services paperless, accountable, and efficient across the country.

With the e-Challan payment system also live in Delhi and Gujarat, the high volume of early adoption in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is setting a precedent for the nationwide digitisation of civic and law enforcement payments.
