Peddapalli MP Vamsi Krishna slams Centre over Atomic Bill amendments, flags safety risks to India

New Delhi: Opposition protests Atomic Bill amendments as Peddapalli MP Vamsi Krishna flags safety risks to India

New Delhi: Peddapalli MP Vamsi Krishna Gaddam issued a video statement accusing the PM Narendra Modi-led NDA government of compromising India’s national sovereignty to appease the United States, specifically under the influence of the Trump administration.

‘Atomic Bill amendments adversely impacted India’

Vamsi Krishna criticised the perceived shift from ‘Strategic Autonomy’ to ‘Strategic Submission.’ He highlighted the controversial Shanti Bill 2025 amendments, which stripped away supplier liability in nuclear deals.

“The Atomic Bill amendments, which removed complete liabilities from suppliers at one shot, have left our country unguarded from the devastating damage of potential nuclear mismanagement,” Vamsi stated. He alleged these changes were designed specifically to favour American giants like GE and Westinghouse.

The MP further claimed that India's economic and energy policies are now being dictated by Washington, citing:

Oil Imports: Alleging a Rs 2 lakh crore burden on the Indian exchequer due to US-driven tariffs and rising import costs.

Foreign Dictation: Pointing to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s statements on Russian oil as proof that India is now seeking ‘permission’ for its sovereign trade decisions.

The 2026 Budget: Describing Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s latest budget as a ‘complete washout’ that aligned suspiciously with US trade demands.

Opposition demand White Paper on Shanti Bill

The Opposition, led by a coordinated bloc of parties, staged a massive protest in both Houses of Parliament, leading to multiple adjournments.

In the Parliamentary standoff, the Opposition members entered the well of the House, chanting ‘India is not for sale’ and ‘Stop the Washington Dictat.’

The leaders from the Congress and regional parties have demanded a White Paper on the Shanti Bill 2025 and a clear explanation for the reduction of tariffs on US goods in the 2026 Budget.

‘Investigation into failing infrastructure’

BJP-led infrastructure projects are ‘collapsing like cardboard.’ The Opposition has moved a motion to investigate recent bridge and highway failures across the country.

“For 75 years, India stood tall. Today, it feels like the government is being run from the Oval Office rather than the Prime Minister’s Office,” one senior opposition leader remarked during a brief interaction with the press outside the Parliament.

Partnership of equals, says Centre

Government spokespersons have dismissed the allegations as ‘baseless and politically motivated,’ asserting that India’s relationship with the US is a partnership of equals.

They maintain that the Shanti Bill amendments are necessary to modernise India's energy grid and that the 2026 Budget focuses on global competitiveness rather than external pressure.
