Rs 600 crore to upgrade Manjeera water system: HMWSSB allots Rs 3.52 crore for urgent repairs
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has decided to modernise the Manjeera drinking water system with an investment of Rs 600 crore.
Urgent repairs worth Rs 3.52 crore sanctioned
Apart from the modernisation plans to strengthen the cityās drinking water infrastructure, the board has allocated Rs 3.52 crore for immediate repair works. HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy inspected the Manjeera barrage, along with senior officials, to assess its current condition.
Barrage structure safe, apron damaged
During the inspection, Ashok Reddy confirmed that the structural integrity of the barrage is intact, dismissing reports about cracks in the pillars. He said the gates and ropes were functioning properly, but there was damage to the barrageās apron. He directed officials to take up urgent repair works to fix the apron immediately.
Gates and ropes to be replaced
āThe Manjeera Barrage was constructed 65 years ago and its gates undergo annual maintenance. Last May, we finalised proposals worth Rs 3.52 crore to replace gates, ropes and bearings. The tender process has been completed and an agency has been appointed,ā he said.
Works to continue for 45 days
While gate-tightening works have been completed, other repair activities are still in progress. The State Dam Safety Authority recently submitted its assessment report. Ashok Reddy said the gate replacement works are expected to take 45 days, which will require releasing the reservoirās water below the minimum drawdown level.
Routine upkeep instructions
The MD instructed officials to ensure regular greasing, painting and lighting maintenance of all barrage components for their smooth functioning and longevity.
