Severe cold wave grips Telangana; Asifabad's Sirpur records 4.7°C

In Hyderabad, the lowest minimum temperature of 10.5°Celsius was recorded in West Marredpally, according to TSDPS.

Severe cold wave grips Telangana; Asifabads Sirpur records 4.7°C

Hyderabad: Severe cold wave gripped the entire Telangana on the night of 7 January with minimum temperatures falling as low as 5°Celsius in some parts of the state. The morning temperatures on Sunday were also low in some places.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), Sirpur in Komaram Bheem Asifabad recorded the state's lowest minimum temperature of 4.7°Celsius in the last 24 hours. Keramari and Tiryani in KB Asifabad recorded 5.7 and 6.2°C, respectively. In Hyderabad, the lowest minimum temperature of 10.5°Celsius was recorded in West Marredpally.



According to reports, on Sunday morning, the temperatures remained below 15°Celsius in some parts of the city. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad recorded 8.5°C, Abdullapurmet and West Marredpally recorded 10.5°C and Alwal recorded 10.9°C.

Witnessing cold temperatures after days of warm mornings, some surprised residents took to Twitter to share the early morning temperatures in their areas. "Coldwave strikes as temperature nosedives to as low as 7.3℃ in Pala Pitta Cycling Park, Hyderabad today morning! Finally some respite from the warm mornings of the past 15 days," wrote one of the residents.



T. Balaji, popularly known as Telangana Weatherman, said a severe cold wave is expected in the state from 7–11 January. He cited the massive surge of dry northerly winds as the reason for the cold wave. He tweeted, "From Jan 7-11 due to massive surge of dry northerly winds, severe cold conditions expected, temp in parts of North, West Telangana will drop as low as 4-5°C. For the first time in this season, single digit min temp is expected in Hyderabad city too."



The TSDPPS forecast for the next three days said minimum temperatures are likely to fall below 10°Celsius in more places across Telangana on 8 January. The night temperatures will remain less on 9 and 10 January. Thereafter, the temperatures are expected to rise gradually.



Meanwhile, the state saw hardly any rain. Pochampalle in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri recorded 0.3mm rainfall.
