Hyderabad: Telangana High Court acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul on Thursday emphasised the urgent need for gender sensitisation, observing that society has failed to ensure equality and respect for women.

Justice Paul was speaking at an awards distribution ceremony organised by the High Court’s Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) at the High Court Bar Association Hall.

Men and women are the same

Acting CJ Paul said the primary purpose of gender sensitisation committees is to make people realise that men and women are the same. “However, we are lacking somewhere and not active as per the required standards. All of us need to discuss this seriously,” he said.

He warned that gender bias not only leads to discrimination but also affects real life deeply. “We have to condition our minds in a plural way. Gender bias needs to be eradicated through conscious effort. We must realise, retrospect, and accept that there may be some gender bias even in ourselves, and we need to make a conscious effort to eradicate it,” he noted.

Honour women for divinity to blossom

Quoting a sloka from Manusmriti, Acting CJ Paul said, “Where women are honoured, divinity blossoms there, and where women are dishonoured, all action, no matter how noble, remains unfruitful.”

He elaborated that unless society understands at an experiential level that women are an inseparable part of it, change will remain elusive. “A woman in trouble at the workplace or in society needs our understanding. Without this, there will be no change,” he said.

He concluded by quoting in Hindi, “Marne ke baad aadmi kuch nahi sochte, marne ke baad aadmi kuch nahi bolta.., kuch nahi sochne aur kuch nahi bolne per aadmi mar jata hai,” urging men to respect and honour women in all spheres of life.

Judges stress dignity and respect for women

On this occasion, GSICC Chairperson Justice T Madhavi Devi and Justice Juvvadi Sridevi highlighted the importance of respecting and honouring women both at workplaces and in society.

Acting CJ Sujoy Paul distributed prizes and mementos to the winners of various competitions conducted by GSICC. The event was attended by High Court judges, Telangana Bar Council Chairman A. Narsimha Reddy, High Court Bar Association President Anumula Jagan, advocates, officials, and others.
