Hyderabad: On Tuesday, the High Court Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N Tukaramji directed the commissioner, Panchayat Raj Department of Telangana to inform the date by which the state government will hold elections to the local bodies of Zilla Parishads, Mandal Parishads and Gram Panchayats.
Till now 220 sarpanches, 94 MPTCs, 4 ZPTCs, 5,364 ward members and 344 deputy sarpanch posts are vacant in the state and due to the non-conduct of elections to the local bodies, people living in the villages are deprived of welfare activities and developmental activities in their districts.
This is not the first time the court had issued these orders. On March 24, the Division Bench issued similar notices to the Election Commission of India, Telangana State Election Commission and the commissioner, Panchayat Raj Department.
On Tuesday, when the plea came up again for hearing, Nazir Ahmed Khan, GP for Panchayat Raj Department sought more time on the grounds that the advocate general of Telangana will appear in this PIL and apprise the court about the dates of the elections.
After hearing the contentions of the GP, the chief justice said that the Election Commission will hold elections once the state gives its clearance, and adjourned the PIL to July 28.
The Division Bench was adjudicating a Public Interest Litigation filed by Rapolu Baskar, an advocate practising at the High Court, seeking directions to the chief election officer, State Election Commission, and commissioner Panchayat Raj to conduct the elections to the local bodies of Zilla Parishad, Mandal Parishad and Gram Panchayats in the State of Telangana.
