Telangana Assembly passes Advocates Protection Bill; TPCC legal wing hails move

Hyderabad: The State Assembly passed the Telangana Advocates Protection Bill, 2026. The bill is aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of lawyers in the state.

Aiming for more representation
The bill also focuses on inclusive representation in legal appointments for members from BCs, SCs, STs and minorities.
It also proposes the development of infrastructure, including dedicated Bar Association facilities for women advocates.
Protection against violence
Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu, who introduced the Bill in the House, recalled the murder of Advocate Gattu Vaman Rao and his spouse in 2021, which shocked the legal fraternity. He said attacks on lawyers are a grave concern.
The Act now prohibits assault, intimidation, harassment, or any act of violence against advocates and their family members. Under its provisions, offenders face imprisonment of not less than six months, which may extend to three years, along with a fine of at least Rs 25,000.
Protection against unnecessary arrest
The Act also prohibits the police from arresting advocates without a judicial order. It also and establishes grievance redressal committees at the state, district and mandal levels, with the state committee chaired by the Chief Justice.
TPCC legal wing hails bill passage
The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Legal, Human Rights and RTI Department, under the leadership of Chairman Ponnam Ashok Goud, held a press meet at Gandhi Bhawan, Nampally on Wednesday and celebrated the passage of the Advocates Protection Act.
He thanked Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, all Cabinet Ministers, TPCC President B Mahesh Kumar Goud, and all Congress leaders for their support in making this landmark legislation possible.
A large number of TPCC Legal Cell members participated enthusiastically. Celebrations were marked by distributing sweets, expressing joy and unity over this important step towards protecting advocates and strengthening the justice system in Telangana.
