Telangana HC asks state to put complete ban on public gatherings

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Friday directed the state government to consider a complete ban on public gatherings, including in cinema halls and malls, and avoid congestion in public.

Hearing a batch of PIL petitions pertaining to COVID19, a Bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili said COVID-19 tests should be conducted on a larger scale so that containment and micro-containment zones can be identified and implemented. Testing shall be conducted at borders, airports, and bus/railway stations, the Bench said.

The High Court also asked the state government to explore the possibility of increasing the number of beds or identifying more hospitals other than Niloufer for children. Widely publicize the vaccination programme for children between 15-17 years, the court told the state.

The HC has directed the state to make mandatory wearing masks, using sanitizers, and following COVID-19 protocol in large fruit/vegetable markets.

Earlier, the High Court on Tuesday had sought a fresh status report from the state government on the steps taken to contain the spread of COVID19 and proliferation of Omicron. Counsels appearing for different petitioners had requested the HC to instruct the state to consider undertaking all steps to ensure the pandemic did not raise its head as it did in the second wave last year.
