Hyderabad: Justice Maturi Girija Priyadarsini, sitting judge of the Telangana High Court, passed away on Sunday following a brief illness. She was 61.
Her mortal remains are being kept at her residence in Hafeezpet, and the final rites will be held on Monday at Mahaprasthanam, Jubilee Hills. She is survived by her husband, Dr K Vijay Kumar, and two sons, Nikhil and Akhil.
Appointed to the High Court on March 24, 2022, Justice Priyadarsini was 16th in seniority and was due for retirement next year. Her passing has been mourned deeply by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul, fellow judges, and members of the legal fraternity.
Born to Maturi Appa Rao, a Commercial Tax Officer, and Nagaratnam, she pursued an extensive academic career, earning three postgraduate degrees in Sociology, Public Administration, and Political Science from Andhra University. She also completed her LLB from N.B.M. Law College, Visakhapatnam, in 1995 and earned an LLM in Labour and Industrial Law in 1997, securing top marks in Constitutional Law.
Justice Priyadarsini began her legal career under senior advocate P. Uma Bala and practiced law for over a decade in Visakhapatnam. Her legal work spanned civil, criminal, labour, and matrimonial matters, including pro bono cases through the District Legal Services Authority.
In 2008, she was directly recruited as a District Judge and served in various judicial capacities across the then undivided Andhra Pradesh. Her elevation to the Telangana High Court marked a significant milestone in a distinguished judicial career.
