Telangana launches third DISCOM on Ugadi, receives MCA approval

Telangana Rythu DISCOM gets MCA approval to begin operations with a new leadership team

Hyderabad: In a significant move to overhaul agricultural power supply, the Telangana state government has fast-tracked the establishment of its third electricity distribution company. Named the Telangana Rythu Power Distribution Company Limited (TGRPDCL), the entity officially moved toward operational status on the auspicious occasion of Ugadi, Thursday, March 19, 2026.

Official Incorporation and Licensing

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), Government of India, granted formal approval for the incorporation of TGRPDCL on March 18. Following this milestone, the company submitted a formal application to the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) today, seeking the necessary distribution license to begin power supply operations across the state.

Chairman & Managing Director Musharraf Faruqui, IAS, emphasized that the timing of the application—submitted on the Telugu New Year—reflects the government's commitment to a fresh, farmer-centric approach. "The primary objective of this DISCOM is to provide dedicated, reliable, and high-quality power specifically to the farming community," Faruqui stated.

Leadership and Governance

The transition follows a March 11 state government order that established a robust leadership structure for the new utility:

Chairman & Managing Director: Musharraf Faruqui, IAS.

Board of Directors: Four directors drawn from existing DISCOMs.

Designated Shareholders: A high-level group including the Hon’ble Governor, the Special Chief Secretary/Principal Secretary (Energy), and the CMDs of Telangana TRANSCO, Southern DISCOM (TSSPDCL), and Northern DISCOM (TSNPDCL).

Operational Readiness

To ensure a smooth rollout, the state has already mobilized human resources. A total of 51 engineers and specialized staff members have been deputed from the existing Southern and Northern DISCOMs to man the new TGRPDCL corporate office. These officials will oversee the initial phase of the company's transition as it carves out its niche as a specialized agricultural utility.

The formal application for the distribution license was presented to ERC Secretary V Ramachander by a delegation including TGRPDCL company secretary V Anil Kumar and chief engineer N Sravan Kumar.
