Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Wednesday directed officials to implement urgent and long-term measures to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the state.
This comes after power demand in Telangana witnessed a sharp increase this July due to delayed monsoon rains and heightened use of air conditioners.
Deputy Chief Minister was speaking at a high-level review meeting with senior officials of the power utilities, including SPDCL, TRANSCO, GENCO, and NPDCL, held at SPDCL headquarters.
Peak Demand Surging with Each Passing Year
Citing consumption data, the Deputy CM noted that Telangana’s electricity demand has grown significantly over the past year.
“On March 24 of last year, 308.45 million units of electricity were supplied. On March 18 this year, 335.19 million units were delivered. This is the highest in the state’s history,” he said.
He added that peak power demand also saw a considerable rise: “Last year, on March 8, peak demand was 15,497 MW. This year, on March 20, it reached 17,162 MW. Despite an increase of nearly 2,000 MW, the power supply was uninterrupted.”
Projections Point to 33,773 MW Demand by 2034
The Deputy CM shared projections from central energy agencies, stating that Telangana’s peak power demand is expected to grow at an average rate of 9.8% annually.
“By 2034, our demand is likely to touch 33,773 MW. Every district in the state has seen a noticeable increase in electricity requirements in the last five years,” he said.
In response, he asked the power department to plan proactively and take all necessary steps to ensure that rising demands do not result in any inconvenience to consumers.
“Construct new substations wherever necessary and ensure there are no delays in execution,” he said.
Compensation and Employment for Land Contributors
The Deputy CM emphasized the importance of social responsibility while expanding infrastructure.
“Provide employment opportunities to those who gave up their land for the substation construction. Their contribution must be acknowledged meaningfully,” he said.
Focus on Hyderabad and Infrastructure Upgrades
Highlighting the rapid urban growth of Hyderabad, Bhatti Vikramarka directed officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for laying underground electricity cables in the city.
“Hyderabad is growing at a fast pace. To make the grid more resilient and reduce disruptions, prepare a comprehensive plan for underground cabling,” he instructed.
Addressing the shortage of land in urban areas for installing transformers, he also ordered the replacement of existing 12.5 MVA transformers with 16 MVA units to handle increasing loads.
Push for Renewable Energy
The Deputy CM reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable power solutions.
“Give full attention to renewable energy. Take appropriate actions to increase its share in our energy mix,” he said.
