Hyderabad: Telangana created a new milestone in the power sector by successfully meeting a record peak electricity demand of 18,139 MW at 11:01 am on Tuesday, marking the highest-ever consumption in the State’s history.
The supply was managed without any interruption, underscoring the robustness of the State’s power infrastructure.
Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu congratulated senior officials and staff of the State power utilities for efficiently handling the unprecedented demand while ensuring uninterrupted and quality power supply.
“This achievement reflects Telangana’s economic growth, operational efficiency, and seamless coordination within the power sector,” he said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Rising power demand reflects rapid growth
The steady surge in electricity consumption highlights Telangana’s rapid expansion across industrial, agricultural and urban sectors. Despite its relatively smaller geographical size, the State has reached demand levels comparable to much larger States.
At 18,139 MW, Telangana’s peak demand stands close to that of Madhya Pradesh (around 19,900 MW) and Rajasthan (19,600–20,600 MW). Notably, Telangana has recorded higher peak demand than industrial States such as Punjab, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.
Officials said the rapid growth of IT, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing industries, lift irrigation schemes and expanding urban infrastructure has significantly contributed to the rising electricity consumption.
Power demand has been consistently increasing year by year
The upward trend in peak demand over the past few years illustrates the State’s growth trajectory:
2023–24: 15,623 MW (March 8, 2024)
2024–25: 17,162 MW (March 20, 2025)
2025–26 (previous peak): 17,162 MW
2026 (current record): 18,139 MW (March 3)
The latest figure marks a significant jump, pushing Telangana into a new peak demand phase.
‘Ready for summer and future needs’
The Deputy Chief Minister said the State is well-prepared to meet the anticipated summer peak demand through advance planning and strengthened infrastructure.
“A strong grid network, strategic power procurement and coordinated operations enable us to meet rising demand seamlessly. Telangana is not only addressing present requirements but is also geared up for future growth,” he stated.
Commitment to quality and reliable supply
Emphasising the collective effort behind the achievement, Bhatti Vikramarka noted that from control rooms to field-level staff, coordinated teamwork ensured uninterrupted supply.
“The power sector is a driving force behind Telangana’s development. This accomplishment sets an example for other States,” he added.
With demand continuing to rise steadily, Telangana’s power utilities have positioned themselves to support the State’s fast-paced economic growth while maintaining a reliable and quality electricity supply.
