Hyderabad: Telangana has rolled out a first-of-its-kind initiative by negotiating direct discounts with electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, offering up to 20 per cent price cuts for State government employees to accelerate clean mobility adoption.
The highlights of the initiative:
- Up to 20% discount on electric two- and four-wheelers
- Savings up to Rs 4 lakh per family
- Over 5 lakh government employees to benefit
- First such state-negotiated OEM discount model in India
- No direct subsidy burden on the State government

- Mahindra Electric
- Ola Electric
- Gravton Motors
- Ather Energy

Existing EV policy benefits
100% exemption on:
- Road tax
- Registration fees

“By empowering government employees as early adopters, we are accelerating the transition towards cleaner mobility across society,” Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said.
Government pushes EV-only procurement
The announcement follows a directive from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy mandating that all government departments procure only electric vehicles going forward.
Even vehicles hired for official use in core urban areas are to be electric.
The state already operates more than 2,800 electric buses as part of its public transport system, reflecting its ongoing efforts to promote sustainable mobility.
Charging infrastructure expansion
Charging stations to be set up at:
- Telangana Secretariat
- District and mandal offices
- Public parking spaces
Private sector encouraged to install chargers at:
- Hotels
- Malls
- Commercial complexes
- Public parks
Push to reduce urban pollution
The government plans to retrofit nearly 1 lakh auto-rickshaws with electric kits. This, combined with EV buses, is expected to cut vehicular pollution significantly. The focus is on preventing Hyderabad from reaching Delhi-like pollution levels.

What did the Transport Minister say?
Ponnam Prabhakar said that Telangana is positioning itself as a key EV consumption hub, which could attract manufacturers and boost investments in the sector.
He added that the government is in talks with more companies, including Tata EV, to expand partnerships and provide greater choice and better technology to consumers.
“Our goal is simple: Cleaner air, lower fuel dependence and making Telangana a model state for green mobility,” he said.
