Adilabad: Trouble broke out in Adilabad on 12 June over a social media post allegedly insulting the Prophet. The post led to protests and the police had to resort to lathi-charge to control the situation.
The trouble started after a youth was assaulted by a group for reportedly posting a video insulting the Prophet. The police were informed about the post and the youth was detained.
"We've registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC against one person (who posted the post on social media) for hurting religious sentiments and have arrested the accused. The situation is now under control," said the superintendent of police (SP), Adilabad, D. Uday Kumar Reddy.
However, a large number of people flocked to Adilabad One Town police station demanding action against the youth. The superintendent rushed to the station and assured them that stern action would be taken against the accused. However, some protesters jostled with the cops and hurled stones at the station, prompting the police to resort to lathi-charge.
The police said a curfew might be imposed if the locals engage in such acts.
This comes days after protests erupted across the country after former BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Prophet.
