Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has directed the state government to make its stance clear about holding elections for the Nirmal Municipality. The term of the Nirmal Municipality expired over three months ago.
Notices issued to the government and the SEC
On Friday, Justice Bollam Vijaysen Reddy issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary (Municipal Administration and Urban Development), Commissioner of Nirmal Municipality, District Collector of Nirmal, and the State Election Commission. The Court asked them to respond by July 11, 2025.
Petition challenges delay
The direction came on a writ petition filed by S Rajender, a resident of Bagulwada Natraj Nagar in Nirmal district. He alleged inaction by the state government in holding elections even after the Municipal Councilās term ended on March 25, 2025.
Constitutional violation cited
Counsel for the petitioner argued that the delay violates Articles 243U and 243ZA of the Constitution, which mandate timely elections for local bodies, apart from contravening provisions of the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019.
Hearing adjourned
After issuing notices to the respondents, the Court adjourned the matter to July 11, 2025, for further hearing.
