Women advocates demand 30% quota in elections for Telangana Bar Council

Hyderabad: Women advocates practising at the Telangana High Court staged a protest demanding the implementation of 30 per cent reservation for women in the upcoming Bar Council of Telangana elections, scheduled for January 2026.

The demonstration was held in front of Gate No. 6 of the High Court premises to highlight what the protesters termed as the prolonged neglect of women’s representation in the Bar Council.

‘Continued discrimination against women’

Leading the protest, advocate T Rajitha criticised the Telangana Bar Council for its refusal to introduce reservation for women advocates.

She alleged that the Council’s approach reflected a discriminatory mindset and ignored repeated representations made by women members of the legal fraternity.

Rajitha pointed out that several State Bar Councils across the country have already adopted reservation policies to ensure adequate representation of women, while Telangana continues to lag.

Allegations against Bar Council leadership

The protesting advocates accused Bar Council of Telangana Chairman A Narasimha Reddy of showing a lack of interest in addressing the long-pending demand.

Rajitha said that despite multiple requests, the Chairman has failed to forward a no-objection or recommendation to the Bar Council of India, a mandatory step for implementing women’s reservation in the elections.

She maintained that this inaction undermines the principles of equality and fair representation within the legal profession.

Call for gender justice

Terming the issue as one of gender justice, the women advocates asserted that the absence of a reservation denies them a fair voice in the Bar Council. They warned that the agitation would be intensified, including legal recourse, if the demand continues to be ignored.

Several women advocates, including Amrapaali, Subhashini and Lakshmi, among others, participated in the protest, raising slogans and urging immediate corrective steps.

The demonstration concluded with a collective resolve to continue the movement until a 30 per cent reservation for women advocates is ensured in the Bar Council elections.
