AP polls: SEC cracks whip against illegal electioneering, launches helpline

Vijayawada : Acting on the complaints, Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) has cautioned ward volunteers against illegal electioneering in municipal polls.

The SEC said illegal electioneering involving any ward volunteer in the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) where elections are taking place is punishable electoral offence and violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

The SEC has launched a helpline on which people can register poll-related complaints round the clock. Besides the helpline number, the commission has publicized email ID so that people can register complaints. Complaints can now be made to the Commission's 24 Ɨ7 call center 0866-2466877. The SEC assured that action will be taken immediately.

The Commission said the complaint can also be mailed on secy.apsec2@gmail.com. Complaints can also be registered on the helplines and call centers of district collectors and municipal commissioners.

All district collectors and municipal commissioners have been informed to take immediate necessary action and instill confidence among the general public.

"Ward volunteers shall not contact any beneficiary group in any illegal manner to solicit votes for a favored contestant, which is a punishable offence under Election Law," the commission said.
