Vijayawada: A local court sentenced a 35-year-old man to death for brutally killing his 29-year-old pregnant wife at Fakeer Gudem area in Vijayawada.

Mahila Sessions Judge, Vijayawada, G Prathiba Devi said it was not just the crime but the manner in which it was committed.

According to the charge sheet filed by the Vijayawada police, the deceased Sylaja of Lingareddipalem was married to the Battula Nambiar alias Sujith of Jonnalapadu village on December 21, 2018.

Later, the couple shifted to the Krishnalakna area in Vijayawada city and stayed in a rented house. Sujith was working as a lecturer at a private college in Gudivada, while Sylaja was working as a teacher at a private school in Vijayawada.

A few months after their marriage, Sujith quit his job and started harassing his wife for money.

On June 15, 2019, Sujith poured petrol on Sylaja and set her afire. Neighbors heard the screams and rushed to rescue her. By the time they reached Sylaja's house, she had suffered severe burn injuries.

Though she was shifted to the hospital, the doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Based on the complaint from the victim's parents, the Krishnalanka police registered a case against Sujith under sections 498 (A), 302 of IPC, and four of Dowry Prohibition Act. Police nabbed Sujith and filed a charge sheet

Additional Public Prosecutor G Daiva Prasad appeared for the police. Nearly 18 witnesses were examined during the trial.
