Visakhapatnam: A 6-year-old girl drowned and seven others have gone missing after two country-made boats capsized in Sileru River along Andhra-Odisha Border in Vizag Agency on Monday night.

The victims are natives of Odisha. Locals said that two country-made boats started off from Sileru on Monday night carrying 11 people. They were returning to their village under the Malkangiri district of Odisha when the incident occurred.

One of the boats capsized soon after it started off. Another capsized when some of the people on board the first boat tried to leap over to save themselves from drowning.

Three of them managed to swim to shore. Eight persons are still missing. The body of the child has been fished out.

Police from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have launched an operation for the remaining missing seven persons. Police suspect that the missing persons might have drowned.

Locals said that the victims, belonging to Odisha had migrated to Hyderabad in search of livelihood. Eleven persons were returning to their homes after they were rendered jobless due to lockdown.

Police said that they are ascertaining the exact reasons for the incident.
