By Newsmeter Network Published on 15 March 2021 4:08 AM GMTVisakhapatnam: YSRCP has hit Telugu Desam Party (TDP) where it hurts more in the Urban Local Body polls.
Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy's party won Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, which was once considered the fort of Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
TDP had made significant inroads in Visakhapatnam during the last assembly elections. It was crucial for the YSRCP not only to defeat TDP but smoothly execute its plan to make Vizag the Executive Capital of Andhra Pradesh after clearing legal hurdles.
Out of the 98 wards, YSRCP won in 58, TDP grabbed 30, independents and Jana Sena got three each, while BJP, CPIM, and CPI had to settle on one each.
Gnanapuram zone gives lead to YSRCP
While the Bheemili, Madhurawada, Suryabagh, Gajuwaka and Pendurthi zones threw a mixed bag of results, Gnanapuram zone gave a huge mandate to YSRCP.
Out of the 23 wards, YSRCP won 20. Gnanapuram area has several urban slum pockets.
People attest executive capital plan: YSRCP leaders
YSRCP leaders claimed that the GVMC civic body election results indicated that people have supported the move to make Visakhapatnam as the executive capital of Andhra Pradesh.
"Deeply grateful to the people of Vizag for supporting YSRCP candidates in the G.V.M.C Elections and for expressing your confidence and faith in CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's leadership, vision, and commitment to the development and progress of Vizag and the welfare of people," tweeted YSRCP senior leader Vijayasai Reddy who was steering the ULB campaign of the YSRCP in Vizag.
He also expressed confidence that people in Vizag support Vizag as the executive capital.
Speaking to the media, tourism minister Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao and Kannababu said this election also proved that the social welfare measures taken up by their government during the last 21 months reached the targeted social groups all over the state.
"Chandrababu Naidu and his son Lokesh resorted to dirty politics during their short campaign. Now they are hiding in neighboring State and have no courage to show their faces to the people,'' Kannababu said.
He said Naidu had blamed that EVM tempering for the 2019 defeat. He said Naidu is now keeping mum on the use of ballot papers.
Stating that YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will rule for another 25 years, Srinivasa Rao said they lost many wards in GVMC polls and the loss is being analyzed.
He said the biggest win for the YSRC was in Visakhapatnam North assembly segment where the party won 15 of the 17 divisions.
