Visakhapatnam: A new born baby girl was found abandoned in bushes on the outskirts of Bhogapuram village under Rolugunta Mandal in the Vizag district.

Sub-Inspector of Police, Rolugunta, B Naga Karthik rescued the baby and shifted her to the Primary Health Centre at Rolugunta for first aid. Though the incident took place on Thursday evening, it came to light on Friday.

Earlier, police received a call from farmer G Srinivas who spotted the abandoned baby girl in the bushes. A police team led by Naga Karthik rushed to the spot and found the infant wrapped in a cloth. Fortunately, the baby girl was noticed by Srinivas before any stray animal could harm her.

Naga Karthik said the infant was bitten by ants.

"I shifted her to a local hospital where she was fed and treated. We later informed the officials of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). The infant has been shifted to the Narsipatnam Hospital for better treatment, '' he added.

Later the ICDS officials shifted the infant to King George Hospital in Vizag city for specialized care.

"We have received more than 40 phone calls from childless couples about the abandoned infant. Over 10 couples visited our police station citing that they want to adopt the abandoned baby girl. But, there are certain rules for the adoption,'' he said.

Police have registered a case under Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). "We were checking the records at the private as well as the government hospitals in the region to trace the parents of the infant," he said.
