Vizag Rural police chief B. Krishna Rao said in 2021 Maoists killed one civilian in a blast while six Maoists were gunned down by security personnel in three exchanges of fire. In 2020, the rebels had killed four persons.
The Vizag Rural police arrested five extremists and 23 militia members in 2021 while in 2020, they had arrested 23 red rebels.
A total of 17 Maoists, including two top guns Jalandhar Reddy alias Krishna (SZCM) and Chikkudu Chinna Rao alias Sudheer (DCM), surrendered before the police in 2021. The surrender of the two key leaders was a jolt to the outfit.
Mr. Rao said the Maoist party has no fresh recruitments and is at its lowest.
The police chief said cooperation with neighbouring Odisha police increased during the last two years which has enabled the law enforcing agencies to limit the activities of the Maoists. The red rebels' recruitment of cadres in their strongholds in Chhattisgarh and Odisha has also been limited, Mr. Rao added.
The police said that recruitment of cadres has also stopped in Andhra Pradesh and the Maoists have failed to attract youth with their age-old ideology. Moreover, people have lost faith in the Maoists, they said adding that the response to the outreach programmes launched by the police has been overwhelming.
