Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation's (GVMC's) plastic ban has completed 100 days in the city. On World Environment day, Minister for Industries and IT Gudivada Amarnath and Mayor in a meeting announced the ban. The corporation had also announced to make major tourist spots plastic-free zones.
On August 26, chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led beach cleaning program created a world record. Around 76 tonnes of plastic waste was collected on a 28 km beach road between Gokul Park and Bheemli Beach.
An official from the GVMC public health department said during the last 100 days, searches were conducted at 27,251 premises and 1,565 kg of single-use plastic were seized. Fines amounting to Rs 11, 72,800 were collected from the offenders. Bags made of cloth were distributed among six lakh families in Visakhapatnam, the official said. ``We are campaigning against plastic through various forms. Street plays, puppet shows, short documentary films, painting, and essay writing competitions for schools were organized to create awareness among the people,'' the health officials said.
