Visakhapatnam: For the first time, a fisherman was stabbed to death by a large Black Marlin fish off Mutyalammapalem coast in Vizag district on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as N Joganna (40), a native of Mutyalammapalem under Parawada police station limits in the Vizag district.
Police said that a group of six fishermen on a traditional fishing boat ventured into the Bay of Bengal for fishing on Tuesday night. At around 7 am on Wednesday, they were fishing around 60 nautical miles from the shore.
When the fishermen were lifting the net, they found it difficult as it was too heavy. Assuming to have caught a big fish, Joganna ventured into the waters to lift the net.
Suddenly, the Black Marlin Fish (Kommu Konam in Telugu parlance) popped out and stabbed him through his stomach with its sharp snout. The remaining fishermen tried to rescue Joganna but their efforts proved futile as he fell unconscious after bleeding profusely.
Police said that it is for the first time that a man was killed by a fish. The remaining fishermen brought the body to the shore. Police have shifted the body to the Government Hospital at Anakapalle for post mortem.
Since the incident took place in the sea, the case is being transferred to the Coastal Security Police for further investigation, they added
Fishermen said that the demand for the Black Marlin (Kommu Konam) is high in the market. However, there is a lot of risk involved in catching Kommu Konam.
