Visakhapatnam: The crime wing of city police busted a vehicle-lifting gang and arrested 10 persons on Monday. Police also seized 76 two-wheelers including some high-end motorbikes.
The accused were identified as Mohammed Ahmad (37) of Allipuram, Gosangi Anand (27), an automobile mechanic of Poorna Market and Bantupalli Suresh (30) of Allipuram. Seven others hail from different areas of the city and are mostly iron scrap dealers.
City police took up the investigation on August 1 after P Murali Krishna, an employee of HPCL, lodged a complaint that his two-wheeler has been stolen from the Malkapuram area.
Based on the complaint and a few other previous complaints, which had a similar modus operandi, police formed a team and started investigating the case, said ACP (Crimes) Ch Penta Rao.
Initially, they stumbled upon a motorbike that had the chassis and engine number erased. A new set of numbers were embossed to pass it off as genuine. During the investigation, it was revealed that though the bike was the latest model, the registration date was 1996, Penta Rao said.
Cops later recovered 76 stolen motorbikes. Fifty-eight of those were recovered from Visakhapatnam. Eighteen others were traced in Kothapalli of East Godavari. Ten members including three main accused were arrested.
