GWMC elections: Star campaigners skip canvassing, thanks to COVID

Warangal: Call it the COVID effect, star campaigners of all major political parties have skipped canvassing for Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) elections.

The electioneering has been lackluster so far with Tuesday being the last day for the campaigning. Almost all the top leaders chose to skip the campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Of all, TRS candidates appear to be more worried as Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and working president KT Rama Rao were not in a position to campaign after they tested positive for coronavirus a few days ago.

It was a huge blow for the TRS candidates as the presence of KCR and KTR would have exponentially boosted their chances. During the GWMC elections in 2016, KTR and T Harish Rao led the TRS to a huge victory.

This time, the local ministers, MPs, MLAs, and MLCs took up the responsibility of campaigning. The major focus seemed to be on door-to-door campaigning as there was no scope for public meetings.

Congress party too is facing a similar situation. TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy has also tested positive for Covid-19. Party working president A Revanth Reddy and MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy took over the campaign for a day.

The BJP is heavily dependent on its State chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar to attract the masses. No big leaders were roped in for the campaign. However, they did manage to bring in MoS G Kishan Reddy to campaign on Monday.
