Warangal Urban: The Warangal commissionerate police on 16 April busted a cyber crime gang for duping online shoppers with gifts. Thirteen members of the Kolkata-based gang were arrested at the Warangal railway station.
Warangal commissioner of police Tarun Joshi said the gang used to target people who made purchases on e-commerce sites. The gang called the customers or sent them a scratch card claiming they had won gifts like a car and motorbike for their purchase. However, the customers were asked to pay a gift tax and road tax to receive the gifts.
"They chose Kolkata as their base to carry out the scam in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and used fake mobile numbers to call the victims. Cases against these people were received in Intezargunj, Station Ghanpur, Zaffergadh, Geesugonda, and Khanapur police stations. We assigned a task force team headed by DCP K. Pushpa to crack the case. The accused were traced using the latest technology and apprehended while leaving for Kolkata on Friday," the commissioner said.
Arrested gang members include primary accused Ippa Raj Kumar, Thallapalli Damodar Gowd, Dasari Harish Gowd, Mekala Aditya, Akunuri Shravan Kumar, Gangadhar Rakesh, Porandla Vijay, Eeda Ravikumar, Darsha Ganesh, Sirikonda Vinod Kumar, Vollala Praveen, Gangadhari Ramchander who hail form Mancherial district and Adepu Siddharth who is from Peddapally district. Three accused - Prajeet, Sanjeev, and Prakash - from Kolkata are absconding.
