Tirupati: The security and vigilance sleuths, on 13 May, arrested a reporter of Electronic News channel at Alipiri check-post for smuggling meat and liquor to Tirumala from Tirupati.

The reporter was had hidden five kgs of chicken and seven bottles of liquor under the seat of his car. He was taking them to Tirumala where he would sell them to customers at higher prices. Based on a tip-off, officials of the check post intercepted the press vehicle at Alipiri and seized the liquor and meat from the man's car.

Despite TTD's efforts to prevent pilgrims and locals from consuming alcohol and meat in the hill shrine, alcohol and meat smuggling have been a constant menace in the temple town.

The VSO of Tirumala Tirupati Devastahnam (TTD), Prabhakar, said they have handed over the reporter, Venkata Muni, and the meat and liquor to Two Town police station. The police have registered a case and started an investigation. This is not the first time Venkata has been involved in smuggling meat and liquor to Tirumala.

TTD officials said they will not tolerate such incidents as illegal activities will hurt the sentiments and feelings of the devotees. Sources, however, said the reporter was supplying the meat and liquor to the TTD staff.

The Tirumala temple has been shut down due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
