Hyderabad: Surgical procedures in geriatric patients are risky but a 105-year-old recovered from a hip and pelvis surgery and is able to walk again.
The patient was very reluctant as there were fears of complications due to old age. It took counseling of family members and also the patient to make them agree to the surgery, explained Dr. Kishore B. Reddy, orthopedic and ortho oncology surgeon. The surgery was carried out by Dr. Reddy and his team.
The patient fell down and fractured his hip and pelvic bones. "Due to this reason, the patient was bedridden and dependent on family members. They were scared to undergo the surgery. This is often seen in patients in advanced stages of life. The pain and depending on someone for the rest of their living days are a cause of concern. The family agreed and also instilled confidence in the patient," said Dr. Reddy.
The surgery was performed using the protocols for geriatric interventions and it was successful. A resident of Moosapet in Hyderabad, the patient underwent a rehabilitation programme. The patient is now able to walk again and can independently perform the daily tasks.
The medicines, anesthesia, and other protocols of care change in geriatric care which is an emerging field in medicine. Advanced age patients require surgical, therapeutic and rehabilitation programs which are to be designed according to their age.
