By Newsmeter Network Published on 7 July 2023 2:49 PM GMTHyderabad: Adults are generally the only ones who donate organs. However, the parents of a 14-month-old infant, who was declared brain-dead, donated their child’s organs in Hyderabad.
A 58-year-old woman, who has been on dialysis for seven years and is also on a pacemaker, was the recipient of the 14-month-old baby’s kidney. The operation was possible owing to the presence of highly trained physicians, cutting-edge technology, and outstanding equipment.
Dr Umamaheswara Rao, a consultant urologist and renal transplant surgeon who headed the team that performed the kidney transplant procedure gave the specifics.
“The most serious issue in organ transplantation is scarcity. In such a case, it is critical to undertake various sorts of procedures in order to preserve patients’ lives. This operation is performed to overcome any limitations such as age and size. Many factors have to be properly evaluated. We need to examine how big the harvested kidney is and whether the recipient’s body will take it. Until the age of three years, the kidney grows in the human body,” Dr Rao explained.
“In some cases, when a young person’s kidney is transplanted into an older person, there are complications such as thrombus in the arteries. However, in this situation, there is none. Transplanting a kidney from a young infant to a 58-year-old patient is a risky option. We were able to conduct this procedure successfully despite all restrictions,” he noted.
“There is a need to raise public awareness about organ donation. Family members of the deceased must be extremely brave to decide on organ donation. However, one single decision will save countless lives. Now, medical research is multifaceted; new means for securing organs have emerged, and some organisations conduct organ donations. Such organisations are responsible for saving lives,” he added.
“The work and success of this transplant would be dedicated to the one and only Padmasri Dr S Sahariah, a chief transplant surgeon.” Dr Umamaheswara Rao concluded.
