By Newsmeter Network Published on 25 Nov 2021 9:17 AM GMTHyderabad, November 25th, 2020: For the first time in Asia, three double-lung transplant surgeries were completed on three recipients within 24 hours in Hyderabad by the doctors at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).
The transplantation surgery procedures were performed at the main branch of the hospital located at Hyderabad by a team of doctors led by Dr. Sandeep Attawar. The three patients operated over the past 24 hours were at an advanced stage of lung failure, and in need of lung transplant for weeks and months.
While the first set of lungs were harvested from a brain dead victim in Hyderabad, the second pair were harvested at a hospital in Ahmedabad and were transported to the city on a chartered aircraft. Both of these were done in the second half of 24th November. The third pair of lungs were harvested in Visakhapatnam on the morning of 25th November and transported to Hyderabad via air.
" When a patient waits for a life saving organ transplant this wait can be excruciatingly long and pain full. At this point the availability of the matching donor organ comes as a blessing. As Transplant physicians our responsibility lies in making this happen and being prepared for such situations every single hour of the day," said Dr Sandeep Attawar, Chief Transplant Surgeon of KIMS Heart & Lung Institute.
"A team of 12 specialist doctors ably supported by nursing staff made a highly coordinated effort from across three different States, and ensured the harvested lungs were transported and transplanted within a 6 to 8 hours time frame. Each of the recipients was at an advanced stage of lung failure and required external oxygen support for survival," he added.
"The Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospitals is today among the best-in-class healthcare providers in the country. This latest accomplishment demonstrates the capabilities of the team of doctors and the facilities created at the Institution. I congratulate Dr. Sandeep Attawar, and every other doctor and support staff members who achieved this record," added Dr. Abhinay Bollineni, Chief Executive Officer, KIMS Hospitals.
