60-year-old stomach cancer survivor saves son with kidney donation in Vizag
Visakhapatnam: A 60-year-old stomach cancer survivor donated a kidney to his 37-year-old son suffering from kidney failure. The life-saving transplant was successfully conducted by a specialised team of nephrologists and urologists at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Visakhapatnam.
The donor, Yedla Paidiyya, had undergone a gastrectomy two years ago after being treated for stomach cancer. Despite his complex medical history, Paidiyya was determined to save his sonās life. Following extensive evaluations, including PET-CT scans and oncological clearances, he was declared fit to donate.
A rare inherited disorder that affects kidney function
His son, Yedla Lakshmanudu, had been undergoing dialysis at an external centre before being evaluated at AINU Vizag. Further investigations revealed he was suffering from Alport syndromeāa rare inherited disorder that affects kidney function, hearing and vision. As the condition is typically passed from mother to son, the family had limited donor options. With female family members being carriers, only a male donor from the family could be considered.
The transplant was overseen by Dr Uday Dipakrao Gajare and Dr Vaishnavi, consultant nephrologists at AINU Vizag. The team managed the case from diagnosis through recovery, ensuring personalised care and close monitoring throughout the process.
āThis transplant was not only a clinical challenge but also a deeply emotional journey,ā said Dr Gajare. āA father giving his son the gift of life once again is a profound act of love and courage. We are proud to have been part of their story and are optimistic about the sonās recovery and long-term well-being.ā
The surgical procedure was performed by AINU Vizagās senior urologists and transplant surgeonsāDr G Ravindra Varma, Dr Amit Saple, and Dr P Sridhar. According to Dr. Varma and Dr Saple, the operation was particularly complex due to the donorās prior abdominal surgery. However, thanks to meticulous planning and a coordinated surgical approach, the transplant was completed successfully.
