95% of Andhra HIV patients show reduced viral load; APSACS ranks second nationally
Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) has secured the second rank nationwide in the fight against HIV/AIDS, marking a significant jump from its 11th position during the same period last year.
The achievement was announced by EpiSAX Project Director Neelakantha Reddy on Wednesday.
AP improves across key health indicators
The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), the Union government’s nodal agency, evaluated States’ performance from April to June 2025 and awarded Andhra Pradesh a score of 98 out of 132, translating to 74.2 per cent. This ranking reflects major improvements across key health indicators and program implementation.
Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav congratulated APSACS, noting that Andhra Pradesh’s progress within a year demonstrates effective planning, monitoring and execution.
Key achievements
Viral load reduction: As per UNAIDS targets, 95 per cent of patients on treatment in Andhra Pradesh recorded reduced viral load, improving the quality of life for nearly 2.3 lakh people living with HIV.
Awareness campaigns: APSACS exceeded its targets in social media outreach and conducted large-scale awareness programs in schools and colleges through e-modules on the HIV Act-2017. Students were issued participation certificates.
Targeted interventions: The state achieved 100 per cent progress in HIV testing initiatives under Targeted Interventions and the Link Worker Scheme, implemented in collaboration with NGOs, community organisations and outreach workers.
Mother-to-child prevention: APSACS ensured 100 per cent treatment for pregnant women testing positive for syphilis through ICTCs and DSRCs, preventing transmission to newborns.
The State also achieved 95 per cent coverage in diagnostic testing for infants.
High-risk group coverage: Against NACO’s annual target of 90 per cent coverage of high-risk groups, Andhra Pradesh reached 124 per cent, aided by hotspot mapping and proactive intervention measures.
Efficient fund use: APSACS utilised 99 per cent of sanctioned funds and submitted utilisation certificates on time, earning additional recognition from NACO.
Officials noted that Andhra Pradesh’s success in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS is due to focused strategies, community participation, and effective coordination with voluntary organisations.
