Anantapur: A 62-year-old farmer from Dharmavaram, battling severe shortness of breath and coughing up blood for three months, received a life-saving procedure at KIMS Saveera Hospital in Anantapur.

The farmer’s condition, marked by ruptured blood vessels in his lungs, had left him increasingly breathless, with blood accumulating in his lungs.

Complex Diagnosis and Intervention

After arriving at KIMS Saveera Hospital in Anantapur, the patient, who had a history of coronary artery disease, tuberculosis, and Hepatitis B, was quickly diagnosed.

Following a CT scan and bronchoscopy by Interventional Pulmonologist Dr. Yashovardhan Mangishetti, doctors identified a ruptured artery in the lungs as the source of the bleeding.

Senior Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Moode Sandeep and the team opted for a bronchial artery embolization, a minimally invasive procedure that allowed them to seal the damaged blood vessels within half an hour without major incisions.

Understanding the Cause

According to doctors, conditions like tuberculosis, bacterial infections, or smoking can cause blood vessel ruptures within the lungs.

In this case, the patient’s prior lung complications, including a partial lung removal earlier in the year, contributed to his condition. If left untreated, ruptured blood vessels in the lungs can lead to worsening symptoms, such as anemia and lung failure, both of which impact the body’s oxygen levels.

A Life-Saving Option Without Financial Burden

While the bronchial artery embolization procedure can cost up to ₹2 lakhs in private hospitals, it was provided free under the Aarogyasri scheme, a healthcare initiative for low-income patients.

The patient’s family expressed gratitude for the critical, accessible care, noting that in the past, similar cases required travel to major metro hospitals in Hyderabad or Bengaluru.

Advanced Local Care, Reducing Need for Travel

Equipped with the necessary technology and expertise, KIMS Saveera Hospital in Anantapur now offers complex cardio-pulmonary treatments locally, saving patients time, travel, and expenses.

Dr. Sandeep emphasized that for patients with severe pulmonary bleeding or similar conditions, timely intervention through embolization can be crucial. Local availability of such procedures is a significant development for residents of Anantapur and surrounding areas.
