AR Rahman’s hospitalisation sparks debate: Can dehydration feel like a heart problem?
Hyderabad: Renowned music composer AR Rahman was rushed to the hospital earlier on Sunday after experiencing chest discomfort and palpitations, sparking widespread concern about his health. While many feared a possible cardiac event, doctors later confirmed that dehydration and muscle strain were the primary causes of his condition.
This incident sheds light on an often-overlooked issue—how dehydration can mimic symptoms of a heart problem, causing unnecessary panic.
Can a lack of water in the body truly lead to chest pain, palpitations or discomfort in the neck and back? Experts say dehydration can sometimes trigger symptoms that feel alarming, but understanding the difference between dehydration-related discomfort and a real cardiac emergency is crucial.
How dehydration affects the heart
When the body lacks sufficient fluids, blood volume decreases, causing the heart to work harder to pump blood. This can lead to an increased heart rate and palpitations, often felt as fluttering, pounding or rapid beats.
Dr MSS Mukharjee, senior interventional cardiologist and managing director of Pulse Heart Super Speciality Hospital, Miyapur, speaking to NewsMeter, explained about dehydration: “Yes, dehydration can sometimes cause palpitations and a feeling of uneasiness in the chest. When the body is low on fluids, blood volume drops, making the heart work harder, which can lead to an increased heart rate and a sensation of discomfort. Electrolyte imbalances, particularly low potassium or magnesium, can also contribute to palpitations. As for chest, neck and back pain, dehydration itself isn’t a direct cause, but muscle cramps and tension can sometimes mimic cardiac symptoms. That said, any persistent or severe chest pain should never be ignored, as it could indicate an actual heart issue.”
Supporting this, Dr Krishna Reddy, a Hyderabad-based cardiologist, said, “Dehydration affects the body’s ability to regulate blood pressure, which can result in dizziness and an elevated heart rate. In some cases, patients feel a tightness or discomfort in the chest, which may subside once they are rehydrated. However, dehydration should not be assumed as the sole cause of chest pain—if symptoms persist, a cardiac evaluation is necessary.”
Chest, neck, and back pain: A false alarm?
Many people mistake dehydration-related discomfort for cardiac symptoms. While dehydration does not directly cause chest, neck or back pain, it can lead to muscle cramps, tension and even nerve compression due to electrolyte imbalances. These issues can create sensations that mimic more serious conditions like a heart attack.
Dr Mukharjee emphasised that while dehydration-related discomfort is usually not dangerous, it should not be ignored if symptoms persist or worsen.
Recognising the signs of dehydration
Dr Mrinalini Rao, a general physician, explained that dehydration presents with various symptoms, including:
• Dry mouth and excessive thirst
• Dark-coloured urine and reduced urine output
• Dizziness and light-headedness
• Fatigue and weakness
• Rapid heartbeat and low blood pressure
“One of the earliest signs of dehydration is dizziness, but if it progresses, people may experience confusion, headaches and even heart palpitations. Muscle cramps due to dehydration can sometimes be mistaken for deeper pain in the chest or back,” said Dr Rao.
In more severe cases, dehydration can cause fainting and organ dysfunction, requiring immediate medical intervention.
AR Rahman’s health scare: A reminder to stay hydrated
Oscar-winning musician Rahman’s hospitalisation due to dehydration serves as a reminder that inadequate water intake can lead to alarming symptoms. The music composer, known for his demanding schedule, had reportedly been traveling extensively, leading to dehydration and muscle strain. Thankfully, his condition was stabilised and he is expected to recover fully.
This incident highlights the importance of hydration, especially for those with strenuous routines or exposure to excessive heat. While dehydration-induced discomfort can be unsettling, staying mindful of fluid intake can help prevent such situations.
When to seek medical help?
While dehydration can lead to temporary discomfort, it is crucial to differentiate between mild symptoms and a medical emergency. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
• Severe or persistent chest pain
• Shortness of breath
• Dizziness leading to fainting
• Irregular heart rhythms that do not subside with hydration
Dehydration can cause palpitations, dizziness and discomfort in the chest due to reduced blood volume and electrolyte imbalances. It can also lead to muscle cramps and tension that mimic serious cardiac symptoms. Staying hydrated is essential for overall health, and if chest pain or palpitations persist, it is always best to consult a doctor to rule out any underlying heart conditions.
