Cancer Survivors Day highlights medical breakthroughs; Hyderabad doc speaks about courage and hope
Hyderabad: An estimated 2.5 million people in India have been diagnosed with cancer, with an addition of 7 lakh new cases annually, as per a study by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research.
The number of deaths due to cancer is also high in the country, with 9.1 lakh registered deaths, as per the World Health Organisation (WHO), making India one of the top 10 countries with cancer-related deaths.
Medical advancements are helping people survive cancer
However, the advancements in treatment facilities have increased the possibility of recovery through various treatments. The number of survivors has also increased thanks to modern medical facilities.
On the first Sunday of June, communities around the world come together to celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day, a moment dedicated to honouring the strength and resilience of cancer survivors.
Symbol of hope and a need for celebration
Dr Rajesh Bollam, senior consultant, Medical and hemato-oncologist and executive director, Renova Century Hospitals, said that life after a cancer diagnosis is not only possible but can also be meaningful and vibrant.
āCancer survivors are living proof that medical advances, early detection, community support and personal determination can defeat one of the worldās most challenging diseases. Today, we pay tribute to their journeys filled with courage, perseverance and triumph over adversity,ā he said.
Why does it matter?
Cancer survivorship is an ongoing journey, and the survivors often face long-term physical, emotional and financial challenges even after successful treatment.
āNational Cancer Survivors Day is a call to action for society to recognise these challenges, raise awareness and advocate for greater resources and support for survivors,ā Dr Rajesh said.
According to him, the number of cancer survivors is increasing with the advancements in early detection and treatment.
āMillions of individuals worldwide live beyond cancer, contributing to their communities, their families, and society at largeā, he said.
Importance of Cancer Survivors Day
National Cancer Survivors Day is observed not just for those who have survived cancer but for everyone in society.
āItās a day to inspire those recently diagnosed, support families and caregivers and educate the public about the importance of cancer prevention, screening and research. We should renew our commitment to spreading awareness, supporting survivors, and investing in the fight against cancer. Let us recognise that every survivorās story is a story of victoryāa testament to human spirit and resilience,ā Dr Rajesh said.
