DCA seizes oxytocin injections used to illegally boost milk production in cattle in Adilabad

Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, in coordination with the Adilabad Police, seized stocks purported to be ‘Oxytocin Injections’ that were allegedly intended for misuse in cattle. The seizure took place on January 22 in Adilabad district.

Seizure details

According to the official press note, officials recovered 109 unlabelled transparent PET bottles of 200 ml capacity each, purported to contain Oxytocin injections. The stock was seized from a person identified as Mautho Aravind Kumar.

The DCA stated that the accused had ‘illegally stocked injections purported to contain Oxytocin for sale, intended for misuse in cattle.’

Oxytocin misuse on dairy animals to increase milk production

The Drugs Control Administration noted that oxytocin is being misused in livestock, particularly dairy animals, to artificially induce milk let-down and increase milk production.

The DCA warned that ‘such misuse involves the administration of oxytocin to dairy animals to artificially increase milk production,’ and added that ‘this unauthorised use of Oxytocin may have adverse effects on animal health.’

The statement further clarified that ‘the abuse of oxytocin in livestock, particularly its illegal administration to artificially induce milk let-down and increase milk production in dairy animals, constitutes an offence.’

Joint operation

The joint operation was carried out by A Srilatha, Drugs Inspector, Adilabad, along with K Nagaraju of the II Town Police Station, Adilabad, and their staff.

The authorities confirmed that ‘further investigation shall be carried out and action shall be taken as per the law against all the offenders.’

Legal provisions

The Drugs Control Administration stated that ‘unauthorised stocking and sale of ‘Oxytocin Injections’ is punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, with imprisonment of up to five years.’

Public advisory and helpline to report illegal sales

The public has been urged to report complaints regarding illegal activities related to medicines and suspected drug manufacturing activities, including those involving narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

The DCA advised that such complaints can be reported to the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, through the toll-free number 1800-599-6969, operational from 10:30 am to 5 pm on all working days.
