Hyderabad: Diwali presents a challenge to skin health, with dermatologists in the city noting skin allergies and skin problems due to the smoke of firecrackers and weather changes.
Firecracker safety and first aid
Skin doctors advise caution in handling firecrackers:
Protection: Avoid direct contact with crackers.
Preparedness: Keep a first-aid box ready.
Burn Treatment: In case of a burn, immediately wash the area with clean, cold water and apply a burn ointment.
Critical Warning: Never use toothpaste or oil on a burn, as these common home remedies can tragically worsen the injury.
Allergic reactions and irritation
To combat skin rashes and irritation often caused by new festive wear or cosmetics, Dr Deepika J Sanbal, consultant dermatologist at Kamineni Hospitals, advised:
Clothing: Opt for cotton clothes and avoid synthetic materials.
Skincare: Stick to your regular skincare products and avoid experimenting with new cosmetics during this period.
Post-Celebration: Ensure you wash your hands and face properly after bursting crackers.
Battling pollution and sensitive skin
The surge in air pollution during Diwali is a major skin irritant. To protect the skin barrier, skin doctors recommend:
- Use a good moisturiser and gentle cleanser.
- Individuals with acne or sensitive skin must be extra cautious.
- Wear a mask if exposed to heavy smoke.
Diet, hydration and chronic conditions
With lots of sweets and heavy diets due to the festive season, doctors advise:
Diet: Balance is key; limit oily and sugary festive foods, which can trigger acne.
Hydration: Ensure you drink enough water.
Sun Protection: Do not forget to apply sunscreen, even during the day.
Medical Compliance: Those with chronic conditions like eczema or psoriasis must continue their prescribed medicines.
“Celebration should not come at the cost of your skin health,” Dr Deepika emphasised, asking those who have existing skin problems to be extra careful and enjoy the festival.
