Hyderabad: Fatty liver disease has become a silent epidemic in India, affecting nearly 40 per cent of the population in urban areas and rapidly spreading to rural regions.

Lifestyle changes impact liver health

The lifestyle-related condition, primarily linked to obesity, diabetes and unhealthy eating habits, poses a significant threat to public health. Despite its prevalence, fatty liver disease often goes undiagnosed due to its asymptomatic nature in its early stages, leading to severe complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer if left unchecked.

Addressing this issue, Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, a gastroenterologist at AIG, and Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin, a liver specialist from ILBS, New Delhi, came together for ā€˜The Wellbeing Showā€™ on Thursday at AIG Hospitals here. Their focus was on spreading awareness about liver health and empowering individuals to adopt preventative measures.

Gut-Liver-Brain axis: The core of wellbeing

At the heart of the discussion was the gut-liver-brain axis, a complex system that connects the gut, liver and brain through biochemical signalling.

Dr Sarin explained how an imbalance in gut microbiota could trigger inflammation and liver diseases. The role of the gut in mental health was also underscored, with 90 per cent of serotoninā€”a key mood-regulating neurotransmitterā€”being produced in the gut.

ā€œYour gut health is the starting point for maintaining liver and mental health. The organs are deeply interconnected and neglecting one can lead to a domino effect,ā€ Dr Sarin remarked.

Combatting Fatty Liver: actionable tips

Dr Sarin emphasised that while genetics can play a role, fatty liver disease is largely preventable through lifestyle changes. He outlined key steps individuals can take:

ā€¢ Exercise: Commit to at least 40 minutes of activity daily.

ā€¢ Healthy diet: Avoid processed foods and refined sugar while increasing fresh produce intake.

ā€¢ Sleep: Prioritise 7 hours of restful sleep to support liver regeneration.

ā€¢ Family health records: Monitor hereditary risks and undergo regular checkups.

ā€˜Own Your Bodyā€™ book launch

The event also marked the launch of Dr Sarinā€™s latest book ā€˜Own Your Bodyā€™, a comprehensive guide for patients to take charge of their health. Written in an accessible format, the book offers real-life stories and evidence-based tips for preventing liver-related conditions, including fatty liver disease.

ā€œPrevention is a family affair. Small changes at home can create a ripple effect, leading to healthier communities,ā€ Dr Sarin stated at the launch.

Why fatty liver deserves immediate attention

With India witnessing a sharp rise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), experts warn of its link to severe conditions like cardiovascular diseases and liver failure. Dr Sarin urged families to recognise the importance of early detection and highlighted the need for public awareness campaigns.

Through his book and interactive talk, Dr Sarin said that owning oneā€™s body begins with owning the habits.
