Family donates organs of foreign tourist who died in Bangalore
The woman’s family while facing their loss stepped up and made the kind decision to donate her organs to give hope to those who needed a transplant
By Newsmeter Network Published on 18 May 2023 10:00 AM GMTHyderabad: A foreign national who regrettably passed away while visiting Bangalore made a heartfelt gesture by giving a fresh lease of life to six persons. The woman’s organs were donated after she passed away to six people who had serious health issues.
The woman’s family while facing their loss stepped up and made the kind decision to donate her organs to give hope to those who needed a transplant.
While one of her kidneys was transported to INU Hospital, her liver, and left kidney were successfully transplanted into patients at SS SPARSH Hospital in RR Nagar. Her skin was donated to Victoria Skin Bank, her corneas to Narayana Nethralaya, and her heart valves to Narayana Hrudayalaya.
SPARSH Hospitals Group COO Joseph Pasangha remarked on the kind act and said, “Organ donation has the capacity to alter lives. A single decision to donate an organ has the power to profoundly affect many others. This past week, we had the distinction of receiving the donated organs of a foreign traveller who tragically passed away while visiting India. These essential organs will save many lives. It is amazing to witness how acts of selflessness like these cross borders of nationality, caste, and creed. We applaud the family for their generosity, especially during a difficult time for them. This should only motivate us all to work harder and more effectively to advocate organ donation.”
Officials from SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation), the government agency that regulates cadaver organ donation in Karnataka, started the procedure for organ donation and obtained written authorisation from family members in accordance with established practice. The organs were transplanted once the patients were chosen from the waiting list.
Organ donation in India
This serves as a reminder of India’s pressing need for organ donors. In India, an estimated 50,000 people die each year while awaiting organ transplants. Only 1,500 of the 30,000 patients who need liver transplants each year, according to a report by NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation), benefit from this life-saving treatment.
