Health Minister launches stem cell facility at NIMS for affordable, advanced treatments

Hyderabad: A state-of-the-art Stem Cell Laboratory was inaugurated at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) by Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha on Monday.

The laboratory has been established in collaboration with Tulsi Therapeutics, a prominent biotechnology firm based in the United States.

A ‘seed’ for human health

Speaking to the media following the inauguration, the Minister used a simple analogy to explain the complex science of stem cells to the general public.

“Just as a seed is the vital foundation for a massive tree, stem cells are the fundamental building blocks of the human body,” Rajanarsimha said. “Just as a tree grows from a seed, stem cells have the unique ability to create new cells and even regenerate organs.”

Highlights of the new facility include:

1. Regenerative Power: The Minister highlighted that these cells possess the extraordinary ability to repair damaged body parts and tissues where conventional medicines might fail.

2. Targeting Chronic Diseases: The lab will focus on treatments for ‘stubborn’ diseases, acting as a lifeline for patients suffering from cancer, blood disorders and thalassemia.

3. Affordability: Currently, stem cell therapy is largely restricted to high-end corporate hospitals, costing patients lakhs of rupees. This initiative aims to bring that cost down significantly for the common man.

Stem cell therapy at affordable costs

The facility will initially serve as a hub for deep-rooted research conducted jointly by experts from Tulsi Therapeutics and doctors from NIMS.

The primary goal of this research is to develop clinical protocols that will allow NIMS to offer stem cell therapy to poor patients at a minimal cost in the future.

“Our government’s mission is to provide the highest quality of modern medicine to the poor,” the Minister concluded. “We expect the fruits of this research to reach the public very soon, transforming NIMS into a centre for affordable, world-class regenerative medicine.”
