Hyderabad: Telangana government’s flagship health insurance programme, Aarogyasri, has facilitated free treatment for over 10.72 lakh people since December 2023.

The initiative continues to play a central role in extending healthcare access to economically weaker sections of society.

Treatment Cap Doubled to ₹10 Lakh Per Family

As part of its healthcare reforms, the government doubled the annual treatment limit under the Aarogyasri scheme, from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh per family. This change has allowed beneficiaries to access high-cost, advanced treatments at empanelled hospitals without incurring out-of-pocket expenses.

First Package Rate Revision in Nearly a Decade

To make the scheme more viable for private hospitals, the government recently undertook the first revision of the Aarogyasri treatment package rates in nearly ten years. The rates were increased by an average of 22%, addressing longstanding demands from healthcare providers for better compensation.

A senior official from the Health Department noted, ā€œThis rate revision has been a major factor in improving private hospital participation. It reflects the rising costs of medical procedures and incentivises quality care.ā€

₹ 1,590 Crore Cleared for Hospital Bills

To maintain trust and ensure uninterrupted services, the government has adopted a monthly reimbursement cycle for hospitals treating Aarogyasri patients. Over the past 20 months, the state has cleared bills amounting to ₹1,590 crore to partner hospitals.

Private Hospital Network Expands

The Aarogyasri network has seen notable growth, with over 100 private hospitals joining in recent months. As of July 2025, 461 private and corporate hospitals are offering services under the scheme across Telangana.

Rising Trust and Utilisation

With financial reforms, increased hospital participation, and wider treatment options, the scheme is seeing higher patient footfall and better utilisation of services.

Health officials maintain that the Aarogyasri revamp is aligned with the state’s broader commitment to universal health access.

Looking Ahead

Officials indicate that further steps are being considered to enhance service quality, monitor outcomes, and digitise records under the scheme. Continuous stakeholder engagement, including hospitals, patients, and administrators, will shape future reforms.

As Aarogyasri crosses new milestones, it remains a key pillar in Telangana’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly for low-income families who rely on it for critical and emergency treatments.
